The brief for this Virgin Media Business promotion was to design and build an eight-metre tall sculpture of a bright red hand making a ‘V’ for Victory sign. “IT managers unshackled from the constraints of traditional IT burdens”. This monolithic fist had to look like it had punched its way up through the pavement and was reaching towards the sky. The entire structure would be placed in the middle of London’s Canary Wharf.
When you are building something twice the height of an average family house, the critical thing is how it looks from street level. During the design phase we went through a variety of different hand shapes and sizes. Once the client had signed off the style, we got to work stretching and compressing the hand dimensions. To make the hand seem taller and still in proportion, we elongated it gradually, part mathematics, part artistic skill, the fingers were 35% longer than usual, yet from ground level the hand appeared to be in scale.
